ULRICH RüCKRIEM
Tempel

(TEMPLE) 1987. Granite

Rückriem’s raw material is carefully collected from quarries with special attention paid to colour and structure. Pieces of stone that have been mechanically split or sawn are often reassembled in their original shape, the final result being always dependant on the brittle qualities of the stone. Ulrich Rückriem, who was born in Dusseldorf in 1938 and now lives in Cologne and London, is considered to be one of the most influential sculptors in Germany, not least because of his teaching posts at Dusseldorf and Städel in Frankfurt. His conceptual practice is seen as a European answer to Minimal Art in the United States in the 1960s.
