A FARM SINCE
MEDIEVAL TIMES

As early as the 12th century, several sites were cleared for farming in the surroundings of Schoenthal Monastery – Wald, Chilchzimmer and Spittel. Timber felling and ore mining were another source of revenue. The Froburg family also presented the village of Bennwil to the monastery as a gift; the monastery’s more than 500-year-old baptismal font is to be found there today.

Nowadays the Schoenthal Monastery Foundation still owns a significant area of land: approx. 30 hectares of forest and 70 hectares of arable land. Hofgut Schönthal GmbH with Martin Ott holds the lease; On the spot Jonathan und Mandana Dennert are responsible for the bio-certified agriculture.
